I heard an interesting news report on Canadian radio today. The reporter claimed that, in private, the French are quite concerned with how well the UNSC meeting went on Friday. They feel they are backed into a corner and it will be very hard for them to jump on board once the war starts. They don't want to be cut off from post-war Iraq and isolated from the rest of the EU.

Apparently, the consensus brewing at the UNSC is to use the Blix report on the 28th as an ultimatum - the UNSC will tell Saddam specifically what he must do to disarm by the 28th or the UNSC will authorise disarmement through 'all possible means'.

It is noteworthy that Bush has been silent since the UNSC meeting. The only public face on the issue was Condi Rice and she was very diplomatic this morning.

Maybe the testosterone is out of everyone's system and now the hard diplomatic work is underway.

Word is that NATO is going to agree to support Turkey on Monday.

I sense the initial smell of sanity in the air.
