Riffing off that Andy Rooney post, it's always a good time to salute my parents for introducing me to a solid half of my musical catalogue—The Drifters, The Platters, Jerry Butler, Marvin Gaye, lotta good stuff. But, as I've said before, out of all them Joan Armatrading waves the scepter. I just wonder how else I would have come into this sort of thing. No one I knew at Howard was really rocking "Is It Tomorrow Yet" or "Rosie."
This joint always makes me thinking of my folks driving to Chicago, the old tape deck banging as we rolled through the Alleghenies.

yes, he is a young man. Joan was part of my young adulthood. For me it was part of the "lesbian soundtrack", but when they put her on, I was... oh, yeah. before that I'd been suffering through Holly Near singing about rainbows and thinking "I love lesbians, but why must their music be so fakking awful?" |
