But remember even if you go to the trouble of doing all the stuff you are doing, the files aren't really erased. The data is still there and anyone who has the motivation can go look in the trash (un allocated parts of the disk(s)) to see what used to be there.

If you really want it to be gone, you need to either 'wipe the contents of the files before deleting the names from the directory' or

consider purchasing throwaway hard drives, just plug one in, and destroy it with a sledge hammer at some point in the future... or melt it in a fire pit... or throw it in a vat of acid...
