S3 Inc. Sees Year Sales $600M, Cites Graphics Chips

By Joseph Rajendran

SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--S3 Inc. (SIII) sees 1997 sales of $600 million, with its graphics chips as the biggest contributor to its forecast. The company reported 1996 net income of $48.4 million, or 95 cents a primary share and 94 cents a diluted share, with sales of $465.4 million. A First Call Corp. survey of nine analysts estimates 1997 net income at $1.33 a diluted share. Sales estimates were not available. President and Chief Executive Gary Johnson told AP-Dow Jones in an interview Monday that S3 expects to maintain its worldwide market share of about 50%, achieving a sales increase of 29% this year. The company will try to maintain its share despite the forecast trebling of the market size to 25 million graphics chips in 1997.

The company's recent forays in the audio and communications businesses aren't likely to generate any substantial sales contributions until 1998, Johnson said. Although prices of graphics chips are expected to fall by about 20% to 30% a year, S3 has a lead because it is now selling its third-generation chips while its competitors are still "struggling" with older technologies, said Johnson. He said S3 also will set up new offices in Singapore and China this year, and look for technology-focused companies as investment partners.

Market research shows that S3 has about a 50% share of three-dimensional graphics chips and a 35% share of the overall market, which includes graphics and video chips.
