Optelecom, Inc. Receives Three Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Equipment Contracts
GAITHERSBURG, Md., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Optelecom, Inc. (Nasdaq: OPTC - news) today announced it has received an initial contract in support of the Delaware Department of Transportation's traffic monitoring and control program. The Company will provide equipment, including MPEG-2 digital video components, for installation at a beta test site. The contract, valued at $217,000, will provide a working model for the Department's planned statewide expansion and upgrade of systems. Successful completion of tests at the site could lead to additional installations throughout the State in the near future. The system configuration is designed to take advantage of compressed, digitized video signals in a switched network environment to facilitate transmission and distribution of real-time video monitoring to various user agencies.

The Company also announced it has received contracts from the Cities of Tallahassee, Florida, and El Paso, Texas. The Tallahassee contract is an add- on agreement in the amount of $287,000 for additional Optelecom data modems and other equipment supporting video and data communications for traffic monitoring and control. The El Paso contract, valued at $160,000, is primarily for data and communications components, also for traffic control.

''The contracts represent some of the first installations of our Series 9000 equipment which was in development throughout 1998. Our participation in Delaware's program showcases our latest technology and significantly expands the scope of our product offerings in the ITS market. We will be featuring a demonstration display of the equipment configuration supplied to Delaware in our booth at the ITS America show in The Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, Washington, DC on April 19 through 21,'' said Anthony DeVito, National Sales Manager.

Edmund Ludwig, President and CEO of Optelecom added, ''These commitments from a cross section of our customers in the Intelligent Transportation market underscore their desire to purchase and install the high quality products manufactured by Optelecom.''
