You are not wrong about the modem part of the both "analog" and "cable" ( otherwise known as broadband ) products providing the modulation and demodulation for signaling. The part you are missing is that an "analog" modem protocol can only have one channel of signal operating at a time across the media whereas the "cable" media can have multiple channels operating at the same time.

Think of the phone system as only being able to have one call at a time as in a voice connection to the central office and the cable having multiple channels of TV broadcast ( I have 52 on my local provider ) on it's cable plant.

Thus the ability of the "system" of cable modems can have one device at the "head end" talking to mutiple devices in the homes connected to the cable plant.

I offered this input to the thread to only as a comparison/competing technology that should be considered.
