I think on some imaging programs, you have to tell it to use all of the new drive, otherwise, it took your 500gb image and put it on the new drive the exact same 500gb size, leaving 500gb as unformatted and unavailable until you prep it.

And merging partitions isn't easy.

Restore it again, see if you have any settings about it adjusting to the size of the new drive.
