I did a few searches but did not come up with a recent study. My feeling is that WFH, frees up a much greater segment of society. Generally, living within the city limits is more expensive. Depending on your circumstances, commuting any distance gets more expensive.

In some cities housing costs are astronomical but COL is less in nearby areas. You'd probably have to divide it into segments such as city, surrounding suburbs, rural within 1 hour commute all the way out to "no cell reception".

WFH adds another dimension. I often ask people on help desks in what part of the country they live. Most are working from home.

WFH also allows for more home schooling or better school choices. It cuts down on a lot of extra costs such as work cloths and transportation.
