Joan: Talk to Merrill's short department re: call back, not the sales broker. I believe the industry standard in lending shares is still currently call back on demand. In practice a call back usually doesn't have an impact on shorters as the broker borrows shares somewhere else (they actually prefer to have enough long shares in their street name before they lend, however, if you are a big enough hitter they will go outside to borrow). But, occasionally, there is a drought of shares to cover a call back of an outside borrowing and the forced cover occurs.

are a bit harsh for simply trying to let you know how it works. Would appreciate some confirmation from industry players who do this on a regular basis.
