Speaking of what the media does and does not know, the widely reported comments on H5N1 in Indonesia are adding to the confusion recombinomics.com The cases in Indonesia are the "Z genotype" which is the same genotype as the isolates from Vietnam and Thailand (the ones involved in fatal human infections and human to human transmission). There are some differences in the Indonesia isolates, but they are just one dual infection away from human transmssion and the number of birds infected in Asia continues to rise (as does the frequency of dual infections). The pandemic in Asia is a MAJOR problem caused by recombinants (and the virus that caused the 1918 pandemic was also a recombinant).
