Dutch ban the burqa

euronews.net

The Dutch government has agreed on a total ban on the wearing of burqas and other Muslim face veils in public places.
Once one of Europe's most tolerant countries, the Netherlands would be the first European state to impose a nationwide ban, although other countries, like France, have already outlawed them in specific places.

The Immigration Minister, Rita Verdonk, has justified the move on public safety and security grounds. But critics say the ban will only make Muslims feel more victimised and alienated. The move comes just five days before a general election, but the issue of immigration and integration are unlikely to play a key role in the contest as most mainstream parties have hardened their stances in recent years.

The Islamic community says that only about 50 women in the country wear the full head-to-toe covering that also obscures the face, and that outlawing the dress would only make the country's one million Muslims feel more victimised and alienated.
