VIX is not a good short-term timing tool. But it is an excellent measure of risk IMHO. And the risks are always HIGH when VIX is in the low 20s. And the money lost by people trading VIX mechanically pales besides the amounts lost by those who ignore the fact that low VIX=high risk.
