Highpockets, you are right there is a big difference between 1997 and 1987. However the 1987 scenario is not the only possible one which would lead to a crash - 1929 did not look a whole lot like 1997 either. I think that unlike 1987 we are about to enter a prolonged bear market. Prolonged because all of the money going into retirement accounts will keep the market overvalued for many years after which time withdrawals from those same accounts will push the market down to a point where it is undervalued. 2010 could be a good year to get back into the market.
