Researcher charges misappropriation of trade secrets -- Lawsuit
could put Rockwell 56k modems on hold

Menlo Park, Calif. - Researcher Brent Townshend has tossed a
wild card into the 56-kbit modem race in the form of a lawsuit
that has the potential to derail the efforts of Rockwell
Semiconductor Systems, the market leader of one of the two
rival technology camps.

The suit charges Rockwell with unfair competition,
misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of contract and breach
of confidence.

Townshend is asking for both compensatory and punitive
damages, as well as the restitution of money that Rockwell may
have earned through what he terms "unjust enrichment."
