Thank you. Yes, people’s motivations are usually mixed and complex. But, you can notice certain patterns, which keep coming up in different contexts and presentations. Drive to power can be influenced by many things - by genetics - and by personal experiences, from early childhood and throughout a persons entire life.

I think many lefties are attracted to Leftism exactly by this - the feeling of certainty about being right about everything, of being on the right side of justice and history. On the side of the future. It’s a nice feeling, and for its sake they’re ready to swallow some things they may not like. Exactly like our modern phenomenon of Intersectionality. You may not agree with the Palestinian aspirations of ethnic cleansing “from the river to the sea” - but you will chant along with them, for the sake of being part of the broader “movement”.

For a while, I conducted a correspondence with an old acquaintance, a family friend, really. As Left as they get. I was shocked by the air of confidence, comfort and superior knowledge he was projecting. He was also being kind - he tried to open my eyes, enlighten me, save my soul… maybe. The correspondence was his idea. I made a point of simply speaking my mind. Needless to say, we’re no longer on speaking terms.

Your corporate types may be reaching the same place through a different path. Over time, their growing success and recognition convince them that they’re something special. Great gifts to humanity. Just think of Zuck, Soros and Dorsey, as extreme examples.

Psychoanalysts of old used to say that an unanalyzed life is not worth living. I’m still sure it’s an overstatement — but as I get older, I understand better what they meant.
