Yes, interesting irony. And it seems, not so many years ago we celebrated the great victory of freedom and democracy over authoritarianism. Unfortunately, that was the top of a trend - which has since reversed.

Back in the post-WWII Europe, the real decision makers on the authoritarian side were Stalin and a few of his top advisors whom he still liked and hadn’t shot yet. They had plans to “liberate” all of Europe, given a chance. What kept them from doing it was the extreme war fatigue - and mostly, I think, American nukes.
