Russia exports about 75% of its gas to Europe. It makes for about 40% of European gas imports.

After the 2014 invasion of Ukraine, the Europeans did nothing to decrease their reliance on Russian gas. Instead, they increased it. Germans shut down nukes (stupid) and went ‘green’ as if a few windmills would save them.

The US is capable of replacing a lot of Russian gas via LNG shipments. We have the ships and the facilities but the Europeans, especially the Germans, do not have the infrastructure to receive it.

That will undoubtedly change since even the green Germans and lotus eating Europeans must now realize that they must let go of their lotus eating ways, and that depending on Russian gas is not a good thing.

Meaning a boom for USA LNG work, reduction of Russian gas exports, and therefore a reduction of Russia’s ability to squeeze the Europeans.

Putin must have realized all this. He moved on Ukraine before American LNG reduced European dependence on his gas. Plus, he has idiots in charge in the US who thought that cutting off Nordstream 2 would make a difference when nearly 80% of Putin’s gas goes through existing pipelines.

If the sanctions threatened by Biden are real, Putin squeezes the Europeans by cutting gas shipments. They, in turn, squeeze Biden, a reason why sanctions won’t be effective.

A well calculated play on Putin’s part. He gets the Ukraine and its significant resources before his leverage disappears. And no more NATO on Russia’s border to worry about. Now it is Hungary and Poland (and NATO) who need to worry.
