Another inspiring message from Health Canada

Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam warned Friday that even if public health measures like masking are removed, Canadians should be ready for these measures to be reinstated if COVID-19 case counts rise or a new variant is identified.

In a public health briefing alongside Deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo, Tam said masks “remain one of the foundational layers of protection” against the virus.

Tam and Njoo also spoke about AstraZeneca’s preventative COVID-19 treatment after Canada signed an agreement to procure 100,000 doses.

Njoo sought to clear up confusion between monoclonal antibodies and the AstraZeneca treatment, which he said would help protect individuals “who for whatever reason may not benefit from vaccinations” against infection.

While Health Canada has not yet approved the treatment, Tam said they expect guidance to be released on the treatment “as the regulatory authorizations progress.”
