I think what you’re saying could bring a solution. What the Russians are demanding, in essence, is NO to nato expansion, with Ukraine remaining unaffiliated. They no longer expect them to be friends - neutral would do. They also want recognition of Crimea being part of Russia. They want recognition of the Russian speaking eastern provinces as independent states. For the most part, it’s all in the Minsk accords (not sure about Crimea, but I think it was part of it). So, if they won’t take yes for an answer, that would suggest they want something they’re not willing to disclose.
