The good: Effortless installation process; makes system administration easy.

The bad: Does not support partitioning; comes bundled with only a minimal amount of software.

The bottom line: The Corel Linux beta doesn't come bundled with many apps or any partitioning abilities, but it is easier to get up and running than most full-fledged Linux distributions. If Corel can iron out some of these kinks, it'll have one of the easiest-to-use Linux offerings on the market.

When we first heard that Corel, a company best known for its WordPerfect office suite, had plunged into the Linux distribution business, we were a bit surprised. But now that we've had a chance to run the Corel Linux beta, we're delighted Corel made the leap into the OS market. With its easy installation, Corel Linux has already overcome one of Linux's most persistent demons. Of course, it's not quite soup yet--its less-than-perfect network support will frustrate business users, and its limited disk-partitioning support is sure to disappoint home users who want to run it alongside Windows. But if Corel smoothes out the rough edges, it'll have a killer Linux platform on its hands by the time it ships."
