If we were really smart, we would run the immigration system like actuaries set life insurance policies. Insurance companies are not charities. They look at the numbers and say -- hmm, we don't want to sell to two pack a day smokers, people with heart conditions, extremely old people, because look at the statistics -- we know what will happen if we do. Unfortunately as a country it seems like we often do operate like a charity. We don't look at the crime and employment statistics and say -- hmm, if we allow in a bunch of people from countries X, Y and Z we know what will happen. Politicians instead look at immigrant communities and think, "How can we buy their votes?".
