In a 2003 survey, the National Abortion Federation found that 83% of abortion providers ALWAYS performed trans vaginal ultrasounds before early abortions. They also found that 16% did under certain conditions, and only 1% NEVER did. I can also tell you that since 2003 the use of trans vaginal ultrasound has increased substantially. In looking at my OB/GYN clients, I've seen an 80% increase in the use of code 76817 (T-VAG U/S - DX PREGNANCY) in the last five years. Most women receiving prenatal care at an OB/GYN today are going to get one at some point during the pregnancy. So it isn't like it the barbaric procedure that it is claimed to be.
