Toolkit of 3D Models and Internet Utilities for VRML 2.0

In an effort to accelerate widespread 3D development on the Web, Viewpoint DataLabs(TM) and Seybold Seminars today announced "The Official World Movers `97 CD ROM," to be released at the World Movers VRML 2.0 Developers' Conference.

The CD features instant access to over 1,000 3D models created by Viewpoint in the virtual reality modeling language (VRML) 2.0 standard file format. Select Internet utilities and information from conference hosts Apple Computer Inc., Netscape Communications Corp., Silicon Graphics Inc., and S3 Inc., and co-sponsors 3Dlabs, Intervista Software Inc., and Microsoft(R) Corp. are combined with Viewpoint digital content to create a 3D development resource for the Web.

"This CD is a must-have `digital toolbox' enabling developers to easily preview and use the latest in VRML 2.0 content and tools," said Sherry Huss, general manager for the World Movers VRML 2.0 Developers' Conference. "All the right pieces are falling into place

-- the technologies, the tools, and now the content from Viewpoint, the leader in 3D digital models -- to make 3D on the Web a reality."

Web developers and designers can immediately use "The Official World Movers `97 CD ROM" to add a new and dynamic dimension to two-dimensional Web pages as well as develop more sophisticated interactive 3D multiuser environments. The World Movers CD offers a broad selection of high quality 3D models, including 300 models pre-licensed by Seybold Seminars to provide complimentary access for conference attendees. An additional 1,000 models are available for browsing and licensing, with immediate access by calling Viewpoint at 1-800-DATASET or 801-229-3000.

All models are optimized for the Web in the VRML 2.0 file format specification and adhere to Viewpoint's quality standards. They include materials, and textures where appropriate, and are available in the following content categories: accessories, transportation, nature, and architecture. The World Movers CD, and Viewpoint's entire VRML library, can be found on Viewpoint's new VRML Web site at the company's Web page viewpoint.com .

"Viewpoint is committed to extending its expertise in 3D modeling for film, video and simulation to the emerging desktop and Web multimedia markets," said Ken Krull, desktop product marketing manager for Viewpoint. "VRML 2.0 is emerging as a next generation open standard for 3D on the Web, and we are excited to work with World Movers and its hosts and co-sponsors -- through the collaboration required to produce this CD -- to offer such a critical and productive resource to developers."

"Content is what drives VRML," said David Frerichs, VRML product line manager for Silicon Graphics Inc. "The materials provided by Viewpoint on this CD, coupled with the power of our Cosmo Worlds VRML 2.0 authoring tool, enables developers to create compelling 3D content for the Web."

Special utilities for viewing, enhancing and animating Viewpoint's models are also provided on "The Official World Movers `97 CD ROM." These include Cosmo Player(TM) from Silicon Graphics Inc., Live3D from Netscape Communications Corp., Internet Explorer from Microsoft Corp., QuickDraw 3D(TM) from Apple Computer Inc., and additional information from S3 Inc., 3Dlabs, and Intervista Software Inc., with links to VRML-related resources.

"We expect our large base of Netscape Navigator(TM) client software users, Netscape Communicator(TM) client software users and Netscape ONE(TM) developers to benefit from this CD by bringing a wealth of applications, plug-ins and content to market. This resource is a major step in taking the Web beyond 2D to a more visual, compelling experience," said Lea Lucente, VRML board member for Netscape.
