I was being a trifle biased saying that SIII did not have a chipset. They certainly have come a long way since the Virge days. The Savage 3D chipset, though it certainly had initial problems, has proved reasonably good once the drivers were stabilized. The upcoming Savage 4 chipset will certainly give Nvidia's TNT2 and 3dfx's Voodoo 3 some competition, as well as ATI's Rage 128.

I again saw spring rumored as when the TNT2 will be ready, but you probably pegged it, they don't want to spoil TNT sales by announcing anything firm too soon. I also saw a rumor that Nvidia's next chipset may support non-triangle type polygons and surfaces (such as curved surfaces and such). Kind of a full circle back to their initial chipset. Hope the industry is ready for them this time. :)

Since the upcoming DX7 will have extensions that allow board makers to implement custom functions, curved surfaces in hardware should be workable. Of course, the game designers will still have to program this into their code....
