You are off on a tangent. Nobody is arguing that free speech is Absolute. That hardly requires comment.

What is being argued is that one of the "personal preferences" expected in a forum such as SI is the ability to contribute opinion on any thread--the restriction on such freedom to be represented by the TOU--NOT by the capricious whims of thread "moderators".

The "ignore" feature is absolutely ridiculous. The people are not truly ignored. The posts are read. The game simply downgrades the maturity level of SI: "Back to ignore, for you Buddy Boy!" Yeah...RIGHT!

The "ban" feature simply enables and encourages the most despicable and arbitrary prejudices and restrictions on free speech. An adult BB ought to restrict such limitations to the reasonable limits of the TOU. These two features are not tools. They are used as weapons by infantile thinkers afraid of difference of opinion and cultivated debate. If a person is not violating the TOU's then his/her input is civilized.

The banning of free speech to serve the fragile egos of those who harken after a totalitarianism of their personal opinions--well...it is just catering to the lowest common denominator of humanity--those who would control the thoughts and opinions of others. "Galileo...YOU are BANNED. Apologise for having an opinion and start thinking correctly or we will not UNBAN you. In the meantime, you are also on "ignore"--although WE will read all your posts."

Naturally there are limitations on freedom of speech. You entirely miss my point if you think that this is a profound and difficult premise. The challenge is to make those limitations rational limitations (such as are already in the TOU). The challenge is to keep them from being arbitrary, and to prevent them from enabling the machinations of small-minded tyrants.
