Michael.. . you've asked alot of questions. Lets see if I can some of them. First of all, I am an experienced invester, along with being a CPA and CFP. I believe being a long term investor has several advantages: 1) tax deferral 2) less transaction costs 3) being fully invested in the market regardless of the general market conditions 4) long term capital gains when you do sell 5) no management fees, etc. as you have with mutual funds.

Having said that there are several things I don't like about options trading: 1) no tax deferral 2) transaction costs 3) not being fully invested in the market at all times 4) generally short term capital gains when you complete the transaction. Along with that the premium you buy on a put has a time value to it which will eventually expire at the term. In addition, options are a zero sum game, for every winner there has to be a loser on the other side. Buying good quality growth stocks that are leaders in their industry is a win win.
