I've seen some incredible bargains with open box stuff. Apart from the "too good to be true" initial reaction, I'm always wondering why the original owner has decided to send it back. With private sales, I'm even more suspicious.

On the other hand, I once ordered a Dell system and changed my mind too late to cancel. It was delivered. I returned it without opening the box. A few days later, that system was offered as an "open box" deal. Whoever bought it received a factory fresh system at an incredible price.

I've bought some "off-lease" systems. They're also priced attractively, but I believe they're available because the lease expired and not some flaw the original owner couldn't live with. Over the years, I've had two minor issues: a noisy fan and a cranky mouse. Both were replaced under warranty. With the mouse, I contacted Dell two days before my warranty was about to expire.

I have never tried to get warranty from Dell for a system I purchased from someone else, so I cannot comment on this. Dell systems are registered to the original owner. You'll need to change this registration before Dell will even talk to you.

support.dell.com

This link's for Canadian customers. You'll need to find the equivalent for your country. You must enter the original owners' information to match EXACTLY what Dell has on record.

Cheers, PW.
