Available-for-sale classification according to FAS 115. Shares would be classified at fair value with the unrealized gain/loss reported as a separate component of shareholders' equity.

However, depending on the materiality of the investments, some companies hold at cost, stating that the unrealized gain/loss is immaterial to the financial statements.

Anyone know how AOL is carrying the XCIT shares on the balance sheet? I would imagine at cost, but you never know with this company.
