Syria is some 75% Sunni population controlled and governed by Assad and his Syrian intelligence groups at home and in Lebanon...

Assad and his groups are Alawai(considered by some to be a Shi'a breakoff sect.)But nevertheless considered by true Shi'a ie Iran's purist's to be Non-Muslim.......hence the long lasting and bitter feeling between Syria and Irans Islamic radicals....

However they share common hatred and obsessive behavior towards Israel and I suspect that is what keeps Iran from a more overt posture towards Syria, at this time anyway.

Assad has, it appears, several intelligence groups within his fragile government that may be Politically overly ambitious and Assad is kept busy trying to manage these factions.

So as usual in the world of Arab and Middle Eastern Politics we never really know what is going on until it happens...

One thing for certain though...Iran has ambitions of ruling the Middle East and will certainly use their Nuclear Weaponry as leverage, this is certain.

regards
