There's nothing quite like a terror surge in polling to make the president's numbers rise. If you're the president and you and your closest advisors lie to the people they'll initially believe what's being said.

Then follow that up with cooked booked intelligence reports which Powell relied upon in his presentation to the UN; the day-after followup conference with Powell and Bush and the elevation of the security alert, people are naturally going to rally 'round the flag. But that'll only hold so long as they can continue believing what's being told to them.

I think ultimately Bush is gonna have as much trouble covering up his lies as Saddam's had in his attempts to cover up his WDMs.
