When I visited Hawaii in the 80's, every "Don't Walk" intersection in Honolulu had a crowd of Japanese waiting for the "Walk" sign to appear. The Americans just looked both ways, if no traffic, walked across. The Japanese NEVER followed.

You obey mindless timers and switches, Dave, like those obedient, subservient Japanese clones. At a red light, if I'm in a hurry (and only then), I look both ways, scan for cops, then bust the light. If I'm not in a hurry, I just wait - why risk a ticket?
