Health care reform: Small business owners voice concerns

A few Arkansas small business owners gathered at the State Capitol this morning to voice their concerns about health care reform legislation.

Some in attendance expressed the urgent need for health care reform and demand. They want Arkansas U.S. Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor stop Washington gridlock and support a vote on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

They're part of the non-profit group Arkansas Change that Works. It's a non-profit grassroots organization that has been working through Arkansas in support of health insurance reform. Since April, volunteers have generated 13,000 phone calls and 9,000 letters to Congress.

They say the health care system is in crisis. There are a few guiding principles the group feels should be part of the legislation; they include a public option, competiton and choice and affordability.

Many in attendance at the press conference discussed the need for affordable health insurance. Howard Eaton, a Helena-West Helena resident is co-owner of a childcare center. He says he currently cannot afford health insurance for his 12 employees and when one of them gets sick, it really affects his business.

Nancy Shaw is an AVON representative. She also has a daughter with Downs syndrome. Providing insurance for her daughter has been an uphill battle. She'd like to see Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor to support health care reform.
