Joe, RE: Low End PC's Sales

I am just going by the past experience of PC makers. Remember Christmas season, 1995? Packard Bell made a big bet that the consumer would want lower clock speed (and less expensive) Pentiums. They ended up with a hugh inventory carry-over and suspected profit loss. Over the past several years, all reports on retail sales indicate that the high end are where consumers are willing to spend their money, low end means low sales and margins. Wal Mart discontinued their $1000. PC. This trend has benefited Intel with the margin increases we have seen over the last two years.

I suspect (this is my very humble opinion) that some day (could be years) we will see PC's in the $500. or less range, and a slow down in the increase in compelling PC functions. When and if that happens, I believe we will see a true price driven consumer market.

Joe, you could be right. The consumer market can turn on a dime (witness the explosion of TV dishes over the last year). I would rather bet with the consumer momentum, and that has been to buy state of the art.

John
