One thing to establish would be the context of the GS pronouncement, was it just to inside clients, just for gold stocks, or bullion and for length of time. If the call was issued closer to first week of Dec, for a couple weeks gold stocks did tumble...

GS has always been a bit standoffish towards gold bullion, due to perhaps that gold control was mainly European based Rothschilds/BIS. London is where gold action has historically been centered. The gold "fix"....And there's the long rumored squabble between the BIS ( the central banks central bank) and the upstart FED.....

It could be that GS entrance into gold bullion was a follow the leader action, in which case the anticipated move would really be strong. Perhaps the pimple blip GS made on the gold market with their short call would make us more rather believe if was for that short period in Dec...GS influence over the big cap gold stocks who trade most of their volume in NY is much greater I would guess than their influence on bullion...Gold stocks have traded for a time more in line with stock market than gold ...at some point (like possibly Dec 07) in a strong gold bull that relationship (Gold stocks/Dow stocks) is decidely broken....
