What is reality?
As one who has thought of himself as an independent in his life, the present political campaign is disturbing.
You would think that reasonable people with different political philosphies could disagree on what is best policy for the nation.
But instead, we have total difference opinions on reality. It does not matter whether the issue is domestic or foreign policy, the facts cited by each side are totally divergent.
How can this be? You would think facts would be facts. Spin is one thing but this is more than spin. We are talking about basic facts, not conclusions. We are not even talking about what we call ultimate facts in the law.
So discussion becomes impossible even among friends. And on boards like this or the foreign affairs board is seems impossible.
Remembering past campaigns, way back for example with the like of Stevenson etc , statemanship existed.
This campaign is a total turnoff. Whom to believe? And for you lawyers, what standard of proof should we use in these days of terror. The choices are scintilla, some, substantial, prepnderance, clear cogent and convincing, reasonable mind won't differ, and beyond a reasonable doubt.
Maybe the reason no one can agree is that everyone is using a different burden of proof. But the result is chaos in the political scene and total confusion for the middle electorate like me. JMHO. Rich |
