Inode,
So, tell me why any person in his right mind would spend the decade of his 20s in school, running up potentially 100s of thousands in debt, to become a physician, a slave of the federal government?
Most of my doctor friends are specialists where the real money is. Primary Care Physicians (an area that may be experiencing a shortage) don't make that much more than, say, a typical Silicon Valley engineer.

Another area of concern for public health experts is the lack of doctors in underserved areas, especially poor rural communities. Most doctors prefer to live in more metropolitan areas where standards of living are higher.

Every single one of my doctor friends is feeling the pressure of having to provide more and more health care to people who can't pay for it without public assistance like Medicare. Like it or not, that's where the health care profession is heading toward, and it's not creating any feelings of joy among the care providers.
