I think the WSJ article which you posted answers your question. While Microsoft may use AltaVista as its search technology, AltaVista's plan is to become a portal, i.e. competing with MSN. AltaVista's plan to become a portal and to be a search engine will mean that other portals will look to Inktomi for their search engines -- why would they buy search technology from a competing portal? Also it will be more difficult for AltaVista to devote its resources on continuing development of search technology while it is also trying to become a premier portal. Long term, Inktomi will be in a better positioned as "the" developer of web search technology. IMHO Microsoft, Compaq and AltaVista are isolating themselves from the rest of the web with this deal. I have not seen anything today that changes the overall fundamentals of INKT.
