Customers Use Novell Directory ServicesT as Foundation for Value-added, Global Business Networks
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- December 2, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. and Deutsche Telekom AG have announced market trials of Deutsche Telekom IntraLink Service, an offer of Deutsche Telekom Internet Value Added Services. This service is mainly based on Novell Connect Services, providing customers with business-class, Internet/intranet services that are secure, affordable, manageable, and easy to use. Several major German companies are in the pilot phase to be the first customers of Europe's largest telecommunications provider to use Novell's business Internet solutions. With Novell's solutions, customers will be able to extend the reach of their traditional networks for secure, collaborative business-to-business communications. Initial phases of the trial begin this month and commercial availability is expected during the first quarter of 1997.
In the initial phase of the service, the IntraLink Service will provide business users of Deutsche Telekom with remote access to branch offices and corporate sites, and network-to-network connectivity to create virtual private LANs.
"We believe the partnership with Novell will enable us to bring important Internet and private network capabilities of the Deutsche Telekom IntraLink Service to our customers," said Guenter Weick, head of the Multimedia Business UnitT Internet Value Added ServicesT at Deutsche Telekom. "Novell's recognized leadership in the networking market, combined with our ability to offer Internet value-added services, will help our customers of all sizes improve communications not only internally, but also with their customers, suppliers, and business partners worldwide."
Novell Connect Services enable customers to create networks that connect business sites to each other, remote users, corporate intranets, and the Internet. Also, the service lets users outsource the associated costs and complexity of maintaining enterprise networks, while taking full advantage of resources on the Internet and in other online information networks.
Key to Novell Connect Services is Novell Directory ServicesT (NDST) that provides the foundation for value-added, global business networks. NDS is Novell's cross-platform, single point of access and management for all network resources, regardless of platform, protocol, or location. NDS is the industry's first-ever truly global directory service to the Internet that increases user productivity, decreases administrative costs and makes it easier to find information on any network.
"To remain financially healthy and competitive in this diverse global market, businesses large and small must be able to communicate securely and access network resources seamlessly, regardless of where they reside," said Neal Castagnoli, director of Business Internet Services at Novell. "Novell's business Internet services and global directory services of NDS help companies maintain a competitive edge while preserving the investments already made in their existing networks," he said.
Growing Industry Support of Novell Solutions
Deutsche Telekom now joins AT&T and NTT in Japan as the world's third largest service provider and the world's largest Internet service provider to deploy Novell's business-class, Internet/intranet services. Two commercial business networks are available today from AT&T (AT&T WorldNet Intranet Connect Service) and NTT (NTT Network Connect Services). The three ISPs, in conjunction with Novell and other technology companies and service providers, will demonstrate a global business network based on NDS on December 3 at the IBM Almaden Laboratory in San Jose, CA. The demonstration will be held during a meeting of the Multimedia Services Affiliate Forum, a group of over 40 international service providers and technology companies working together to develop interconnected global business networks. Novell technologies based on NDS form the basis for ensuring interoperability among member networks.

Deutsche Telekom and Netscape to Jointly Market Netscape Technologies for Intranet Solutions
BONN/MUNICH, Germany and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Deutsche Telekom, Europe's largest telecommunications company and the third largest carrier worldwide, and Netscape(R) Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: NSCP), a premier provider of open software for linking people and information over enterprise networks and the Internet, today announced an agreement that will allow Deutsche Telekom to sell, market and implement the systems integration of Intranet and Extranet solutions. The agreement expands Deutsche Telekom's range of turnkey solutions for corporate Intranets based on open Internet standards and makes Deutsche Telekom the telecommunications company with one of the world's broadest range of Internet products. This new cooperation extends the existing relationship that was started between the two companies in 1995, and the joint marketing now includes Netscape's entire range of products.
Dr. Herbert May, Deutsche Telekom's Management board member responsible for the Business Customers Division, welcomed his company's expanded relationship with Netscape and said, "The Internet, with its global range and open technologies, is without a doubt a key component in modern business communications. With this cooperation with Netscape, we are expanding our range of products and services in the Internet and Intranet sectors and ensuring that we can offer our business customers solutions that are tailored to their requirements."
"We are pleased about intensifying our relationship with Deutsche Telekom, Europe's largest telecommunications company," said Jim Barksdale, president and CEO at Netscape. "This cooperation will contribute to significant new value-added services inside corporations' Intranets and over the consumer Internet. With new services in Internet commerce and managed Web-based messaging, directory and collaboration services, Deutsche Telekom and Netscape are showing the way to a new wave of Internet development."
The agreement provides for Deutsche Telekom as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to market Netscape's entire range of client and server software within the framework of its Internet Value-Added Services (T-Intra), and in packages with its T-Online products, to end customers, content providers, Internet service providers and businesses. Among the products covered by the agreement are Netscape Communicator(TM) client software, Netscape SuiteSpot(TM) server software, the Netscape Administration Kit and all of Netscape's LAN products.
Netscape SuiteSpot is an integrated family of cross-platform server software that brings the open standards of the Internet to users on internal corporate networks or Intranets. The product line enables live content publishing of data, collaboration and application customization by corporate users. Netscape Communicator is Netscape's new integrated suite of client software for open email, groupware and Web browsing. The standard version of the software includes five components: Netscape Navigator(TM) 4.0, the next-generation of Netscape's powerful and easy-to-use software for navigating Intranets and the Internet; Netscape Composer(TM) software, which allows users to create and publish rich HTML documents; Netscape Messenger(TM) software, which enables users to compose, send and receive rich Web-based email; Netscape Collabra(TM) software, offering discussion capabilities that allow users to share and track information efficiently; and Netscape Conference(TM) software, providing Internet telephony, shared whiteboard, file transfer and chat capabilities. The beta version of Netscape Communicator is now available for downloading from the Netscape Internet site.
The new relationship is expected to increase the integration in T-Online of content prepared with the standard Internet HTML language. Deutsche Telekom's online service continues to offer business customers state-of-the-art Internet technology and a wide array of attractive forms of presentation.
With nearly 1.4 million subscribers and over 36 million connections per month, T-Online is Germany's leading online service. The service's subscriber base grew by over 40 percent in 1996 alone. T-Online also has more than one million Internet customers, making it Europe's largest Internet access provider. No other online service can compete with T-Online's high percentage -- over 50 percent -- of connections moving via ISDN, a fast digital network.
On the basis of its T-Intra services, Deutsche Telekom also offers special solutions for key accounts: using Netscape products, customers can develop their tele-commerce applications into Internet and Extranet services. Such Internet-based networks enable companies to enhance the efficiency of both their internal business processes (via Intranets) and their relationships to customers, partners and suppliers (via Extranets).
The relevant services offered by Deutsche Telekom cover a complete spectrum that includes hosting, distribution, adaptation and integration of company-wide solutions. A joint project team consisting of Deutsche Telekom staff and consulting specialists from Netscape Worldwide Professional Services offers customers optimized product adaptation and systems integration.
Deutsche Telekom AG is Europe's largest telecommunications company and the third largest carrier worldwide. By the turn of the century, Deutsche Telekom's objective is to be positioned as a global player offering both a full range of telecommunications services to residential and business customers and seamless global services to multinationally-operating companies.
