Nick, first of all i have a little bit of doubt left that the U.S. really IS going to be fine. after all, it is the most heavily computerized and networked country in the world, and i question whether the preparations are really sufficient. there is some evidence that small to medium sized businesses are in fact not prepared at all, see Dr. Yardeni's site for details. and then there's the rest of the world...since the global economy is highly interdependent, i can not imagine anyone to escape unscathed from various Y2K disruptions. obviously the oil markets are suddenly taking the risks very seriously, as they well should. a whole host of major oil producing countries apparently has a state of preparedness ranging from horrible to terrible. the same holds true for a range of overseas component manufacturers, transportation outfits, utilities and mining concerns.
so the current propaganda describing Y2K as a non-event is indeed misplaced. i realize that the authorities want to avoid a pre-Y2K panic, but they have now admirably succeeded in fostering maximum complacency.
of course there's probably a certain amount of dis-information from both sides of the Y2K debate, but i am pretty certain that it will not be a non-event.
stocks however will likely streak higher anyway, as easy Al will respond to Y2K disruptions in the customary fashion of running the printing presses at high speed.
presumably the printing presses ARE Y2K compliant....
