Yes, you do need the ability to close your position before you're allowed to open it. The requirements vary.

If you sell puts, you can close the position by: buying them back to close; letting them expire worthless; or being forced to buy the stock at the exercise price.

BTW. Dell HAS profitably sold puts. Check the annual report for how well this has worked for them. (I'm not sure about this year.)

One other thing -- If puts are in-the-money quite a bit, they can, and frequently are, exercised early. Be forwarned and prepared.

P.S. Check with you tax expert about selling in 98 options which close in 99. Regulations aren't clear and vary.
