From China's point of view, a U.S. and EU victory of Ukraine over Russia would embolden the West towards starting a similar proxy war of Taiwan against the mainland. So, if they become convinced that this will happen, they may intervene. They may not wait until Russia definitively loses.

I’m sure they’d hate making mortal enemies out of their customers - and will try to avoid it the best they can.

Leadership…. It doesn’t take much sophistication to press a button. For a conventional war, however - not so sure. So far, Russia was able to chew through everything the US and the EU threw at them - to the point when, I hear, much of the weaponry is already gone. Maybe it would have been nice to have kept the $85 billion worth of weapons we abandoned to the Talibs.

It would be an enormous challenge to fight a war separately, against either China or Russia. A total war against both of them - both armed with hypersonic missiles?? It would look bad. Personally, I’d hit my small collection of decent Scotches and Cognacs.

I think sanctions and asset seizures may be somewhat effective - if used rarely. When it becomes the first line weaponry, those things will prove to be self defeating.

In a sense, using sanctions and seizures against China in the foreseeable future could become an equivalent of closing an Iron Curtain around the U.S. Investing in the U.S. in any form would become as unattractive as investing in the USSR used to be.

Biden’s leadership depends on his support system. Except that our system was designed to have a single top executive.
