I have that problem on my old computer. I don't know what causes it, but I have heard that if you have a "soft" modem--which lets the CPU do some of the processing that the modem chip would normally do--then the CPU can get overloaded and cause freezes, especially if it's not a powerful CPU. I suspected this was my problem because that computer came with a lot of cheap stuff and they had to replace the modem once for a malfunction (something different). Of course, this would suppose that there is a surge of processing going on in the modem when you disconnect, which I don't know to be true or not.
