Scott Walker praised a sex offender on stage
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker applauds as Chris Barber of Two Rivers, Wis., a welder at Ariens Company, leaves the podium during Walker's State of the State address on Wednesday. (AP/Wisconsin State Journal)
The contender: Republican Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin

What happened: During his State of the State address, Walker brought a newly hired welder on stage as an example of the improving economy who turned out to be a registered sex offender and felon.

Why it was awkward: That just speaks for itself. But it's also bad because Walker's team didn't do a basic background check, which shows some sloppiness.

Why it won't matter: If Gov. Chris Christie continues to face problems, Walker will be the only blue-state Republican governor with a shot at the nomination.
