Good point. Let's look at the end to that statement, which was <<which makes all public displays suspect........>> In other words "being tough" may be a state of being or it may be a flaunt to feebly disguise wimpiness; thus, when presented in public, suspect.

Question arises now...Should the man of 2000, be suspicious or apologetic of toughness, avoid the appearance of toughness, nurture a quiet toughness of character that carries no public display, ridicule the characteristic of toughness altogether, promote toughness as a manly characteristic...or some combination there of?
