63% Downside Volume on the NYSE - 61% Downside Volume on the NASDAQ

online.wsj.com

4.7% New Highs on the NYSE on a day that the S&P 500 and Dow set new record highs. This number is way too low to be considered anything but bad at a time when sentiment is so overly bullish. It would not surprise me to see a correction ahead of us of the magnitude seen in 2015. That may not happen of course. I am worried though as we simply do not have a broad based rally going on despite terrific earnings and outlooks. The SOX will tell the story soon. It needs to resume leadership. Charts below the WSJ market breadth data now include the SOX. A failure to set a new high while meaningful is not nearly as bad as if the SOX ends up trading to a low below 1020.42 in the not too distant future. NVDA earnings are coming up soon. The reaction to that should be interesting! RtS

*Primary market NYSE, NYSE American or NYSE Arca only. †Compares the ratio of advancing to declining issues with the ratio of volume of shares rising and falling. Arms Index or TRIN = (advancing issues / declining issues) / (composite volume of advancing issues / composite volume of declining issues.) Generally, an Arms of less than 1.00 indicates buying demand; above 1.00 indicates selling pressure.
