would imagine if you didn't own property and were heavily short the stock market without benefiting from the meteroic rise in gold the last 4-5 years you are way behind by now and it is a self fullfilling prophecy to have to be 'right'..

Exactly, the only way one could be short the stock market and still be alive today is by owning gold and some property.

Those that did not own property or gold AND were short the stock market in the last few years are out of the game, period.
No chance to catch up, except maybe with leveraged gold positions in coming hyperinflation (only with perfect timing )

The deflation case can be catastrophic to one's financial health.
