This was an open letter to the state legislators and Governor from a small
business owner. Just picture this happening all across the country as local
governments continue to raise taxes rather than balance their budgets with
spending cuts.

I own a small restaurant in Pierce County and employ 20 people. I just
received my new tax notice from Employment Security and was stunned to find
out my taxes are increasing - not 2 or 3 or even 10 percent - but a
monumental 100 percent!

Some owners have found their taxes tripling in the worst economy in their
lifetimes while many state employees are getting raises.

The taxes I have already paid the last four years are 27 times the benefits
paid out, yet my taxes are going to double.

I can promise the Legislature one thing: Come Jan. 1, 5 more people are
going to find themselves out of work as a direct result of this tax increase
because I can't pass these increases on to my customers. I have talked with
many other small business owners I know and most of them are doing the same
thing, cutting jobs to meet the increased taxes.
