One of my close friends adopted his grandson after the mother found drugs and left and his son worked too many hours to raise the lad. His wife is dying from cancer. 78 with a 15 year old son, and is doing well. Not a well off guy either but fought in WWII and Korea. Guts count. Takes his son to a learning center which has moved the grades from Cs to As.
