Koan,
What are those self evident rights and who decides without democracy?
We have some of them listed in the Constitution. Others are listed in various laws, both at the state and federal level. Many others have yet to be listed.

In America, we have a process for identifying these rights and enlisting government to safeguard them. That process is in the form of a representative democracy. The fact that these laws are sometimes flawed does not mean that the rights themselves do not exist. That's like saying the physics of relativity did not exist until Einstein discovered it.
And how do you ensure they are enforced without democracy?
I don't know. That's a stupid question to ask, given that no one is arguing against democracy.
Jefferson had slaves! You just don't get it.
Oh I get it all right. You want to invalidate everything he said and did because he had slaves.

Karl Marx didn't own slaves. Does that mean Marxism is a valid philosophy? Too bad it has failed miserably every time it has been tried.
