First off, the existence of 'The Smoking Gun' is now at the top of the thread header, should anyone be seeking easy reference to it.

Secondly, an excerpt from Sheer's LATimes commentary might well be describing what the real problem is:

Many of us saw this awful flaw during Bush's presidential campaign, but, unfortanately, most of the media was bought into the idea that he should be [s]elected president.

Of course, it'll be easy for Bush to blame his unsuccessful war on terrorism--unsuccessful only because the problem will widen as a consequence of Bush's own actions--as the fault of those dastardly Europeans who didn't want to join a Coalition of the Killing!
